Topic: Thankful

I'm thankful for a sight like this to come and enjoy stories Like Mine. I pray for the DADT/UCMJ policies to be changed. Love serving my country, ready to be able to serve as I am, and not under a guise.

Re: Thankful

I hear ya sweetie.  I was discharged under DADT back in '04 from the NAVY and to this day I keep an eye out waiting for the day it's repealed in the hopes of rejoining. Keep up doing what you do and we all will pray for the day where all of us can stand up and say we are proud to serve and we are proud to be who we are with no fear of losing the passion to serve because of the passion we have for another.  Stay safe out there!

Re: Thankful

Thanks for that.  I think it took the discharge for me to truly accept who I am when it comes to my sexuality.  Problem was I was figuring that out while I was in...it wasn't pretty as you can imagine. LOL I grew up hearing "Amanda is a lesbian" as taunts and insults growing up but I honestly didn't figure it out until I was 20 years old. I was young, stupid, and freaked out when it all went down with the discharge. I didn't even realize what had happened until I was driving back to Florida from California, but it was on that trip just outside of Kansas City, MO that an argument with my older sister who was with me threatening to out me to my family did I decide that I wasn't ever going to be ashamed of who I am as a person. Been fighting to keep that attitude ever since.

Re: Thankful

Wow....you have an amazing story. I never really had to figure anything out, but it did take my 20 yrs for the light bulb to shine bright in my closet! lol Good thing is, I never had to lie to come in, because I joined at 19, and rejoined after a break with DADT. I have never felt shame, even though I grew up in a Southern Baptist atmosphere....Very Grateful for never feeling the shame our brothers and sisters talk about.

Re: Thankful

I'm hoping DADT is repealed during the lame duck session. I never served but know w few of my friends that were and others who were harassed and "investigated".

Dream Writer...funny thing about your sister threatening to out you to your family, my sister did the same thing to me about 25 years ago...even though, she, herself is gay! She has since come out to our family...long after I did, but she has since pretty much gone back into the closet since moving to Texas. BTW, she served in the AF without incident.

Re: Thankful

Oh the irony or ironies. While my family is completely against my sexuality to the point that I am barely tolerated at family functions and there's always the assumptions on why I am a lesbian because there's just no way I was born that way. My older sister likes to brag to all her friends or anyone we happened to go out with together that she has slept with more women than I have.  But of course, she's not gay or bisexual!  Funny huh? LOL
I really hope DADT is overturned during the 'lame duck' sessions, but I don't think it will be.  It's the final push to absolute equality. If the LGTB community is recognized as able to serve openly in the military then any member who is married, their spouse will have full military spouse benefits.  And beyond that, the military is everywhere and if some spouses are recognized then all will have to be recognized and then gay marriage will have to be accepted.  I see DADT and Gay Marriage as the same fight. When one happens, the other will as well, so unfortunately both will be the battle that will continue for a few more years. We just have to stay strong and have each other's backs for as long as it takes.

Re: Thankful

I know now that we will not have a repeal on DADT Republicans are taking over ..For the past 2 years the  Democratics have had all 3 branches of Government and still can't get anything done!
